Job Descriptions

The following are brief descriptions of the various Pack positions and their duties.It takes a lot more than the Den Leaders to run the Pack. If you have a question, feel free to contact the Cubmaster, Rich Olin (cubmaster98@gmail.com). The Pack wants to make it easy for new parents to do the jobs described below. The Pack has produced step-by-step “How-To Guides” for almost every “Leadership Position” and “Committee Chair” position. Moreover, the Pack’s Leaders are always available to answer questions. Volunteering for these positions will be rewarding.

 

Leadership Positions

Den Leader: The Den Leader runs a Den.

Assistant Den Leader: The Assistant Den Leader helps the Den Leader run a Den.

Cubmaster: The Cubmaster runs Pack Meetings and conducts the Pack program.

Assistant Cubmaster: The Assistant Cubmaster (a) helps the Cubmaster run Pack Meetings, recruit Scouts and conduct the Pack program, (b) supervises the Den Chiefs and (c) fills in for the Cubmaster as needed.

Committee Chair: The Committee Chair is the Cubmaster’s chief advisor.  He or she is responsible for planning the Pack’s program (including Pack Meetings), supervising the Pack Committee and chairing Leaders Meetings.

Assistant Committee Chair: The Assistant Committee Chair (a) does certain jobs delegated by the Committee Chair, (b) fills in for the Committee Chair as needed and (c) prepares minutes of the Leaders Meeting.

Treasurer: The Treasurer (a) collects and disburses funds, (b) maintains the Pack’s checking account and (c) prepares budgets.

Advancements Chair: The Advancements Chair (a) collects Advancement reports from Den Leaders, (b) purchases pins, etc. at the Scout Store and (c) distributes awards at Pack Meetings.

Den Leader Coach: The Den Leader Coach is the resource person for the other Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders.

Newsletter Chair: The Newsletter Chair edits and publishes the Pack Newsletter and coordinates the distribution of materials at Pack Meetings.

Public Relations Chair: The Public Relations Chair/Historian (a) submits photos and press releases to local newspapers and (b) maintains a Pack scrapbook.

Membership and Registration Chair: The Membership and Registration Chair processes registration forms and files the Pack’s charter.

Friends of Scouting Chair: The FOS Chair raises money from the Pack to support Council and BSA programs.

Pack Trainer: The Training Chair ensures that each Pack leader has the proper training.

Webmaster: The Webmaster maintains the Pack’s website.

Assistant Webmaster: The Assistant Webmaster does tasks delegated by the Webmaster.

Pack Photographer: The Pack Photographer takes pictures for posting on the Pack Website and submission to local newspapers.

Quartermaster : The Quartermaster keeps track of the Pack’s supplies.

Chartered Organization Representative: The Chartered Organization Representative is a member of our Chartered Organization (the First United Methodist Church) who acts as the liaison between the Pack and the Church.

Car Wash/Bake Sale Chair: The Chair organizes this fundraising event, which takes place in the Fall at the Church.  (All Pack families are expected to participate in this event.)

T-Shirt Chair: The Chair organizes a T-shirt design contest early in the Fall, then purchases and distributes the T-shirts.

 

Committees

General Note About Committees:  Committees are responsible for the relevant activities.  The Committee Members (1 point) and Chair (2 points) will decide which specific activities will be run and when they will occur.  The Chair will (a) perform some aspect of the relevant activities, such as organizing one Outing (in the case of the Outings Committee), (b) supervise the Members of the Committee and (c) act as a resource person for the Members (to answer questions, etc.).  Each Member will be responsible for some aspect of the activities of the Committee, such as organizing a trip (in the case of the Outings Committee). Keep in mind that being a Member does not mean merely participating in or attending the activity, such as selling Popcorn (in the case of the Popcorn Committee) or bringing food (in the case of the Blue & Gold Committee).

Blue & Gold Dinner Committee

The Blue & Gold Dinner, a pot-luck dinner to celebrate the birth of Scouting, is a Pack Meeting that usually occurs on a Friday in January. Each Member will assist in a specific aspect of the event, such as (a) determining the theme of the Dinner and planning the related activities and entertainment (b) setting up the room, decorations, etc. and (c) planning and coordinating the serving of food.

Family Camping Committee

The Chair (a) coordinates the Pack’s participation in Cub-E-Los Weekend (which is organized by the Council) and (b) organizes a Family Camping trip (organized by the Pack) during the Summer. Each Member will assist in a specific aspect of the event, such as (i) buying food, (ii) cooking and (iii) clean-up.

Outings Committee

Outings have included variety of day trips, overnight trips and sporting events, typically one each month or two. Examples include the NJ Devils, Harlem Globetrotters, NJ Nets, Patriots baseball, bowling, ice skating, roller skating, ski trip, fishing, hiking, museum overnight and KidSports overnight. Each Member will organize one Outing.

Picnic Committee

The Pack Picnic is usually held on a Sunday in the beginning of June. Each Member will assist in a specific aspect of the event, such as (a) activities/sporting events, (b) buying food and (c) set-up/cooking.

Pinewood Derby Committee

The Pinewood Derby, a car race/show, is a Pack Meeting that usually occurs on a Friday in February. Each Member will assist in a specific aspect of the event, such as (a) organizing technical workshops, (b) judging and arranging for awards and (d) organizing other activities to occupy the Scouts and siblings during the Derby.

Popcorn Committee

Popcorn is the Cub Scout's version of Girl Scout Cookies. The Popcorn Sale is the Pack's primary fundraiser and is critical to the success of the Pack program because it accounts for over half of the Pack's revenues. The Chair distributes forms, collects monies and orders and distributes the popcorn and prizes. The Members assist the Chair in these respects.

Service Projects Committee

Service Projects have included Church clean-up, town clean-up, conservation projects and Scouting for Food. Each Member will organize one service project.

Space Derby Committee

The Space Derby, a rocket race/show, is a Pack Meeting that can occur anytime during the year. Each Member will assist in a specific aspect of the event, such as (a) registration and awards and (b) organizing other activities to occupy the Scouts and siblings during the Derby.

Summer Activities Committee

Summer Activities have included day trips, hiking, a family camping trip, fossil hunting, Patriots baseball game and miniature golf. Each Member will organize one Summer Activity.
