As of January 7, 2009, we have made and supplied 983 sandwiches
and logged 90 volunteer hours at Good Turn for America. Great going so far!

November, 2009 As our boys deliver and collect their Scouting for Food bags, and as we spend next Thursday in the warmth and abundance of our homes on the Thanksgiving holiday, I would like you to consider participation in a new Pack 98 ongoing service project, "Pack 98's Sandwich Factory for the Homeless." While delivering coats and blankets collected by our Webelos for a Citizenship service project to the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, my wife, Susan, was struck by the dedication and mission of the organization. She asked them how else we could help and their answer was "sandwiches." That's it - one word, but one that summed up the challenges they face in trying to help these people who have so little. Sandwiches, something that I suspect we and our children take for granted on an ordinary day, but something that means the world to a hungry, homeless person struggling daily. And so we have come up with a pack service project: "Pack 98's Sandwich Factory for the Homeless." We would like our Cub Scout Dens to make sandwiches to deliver to the Coalition once per week. Each den, on a rotating schedule, will be asked to take a turn on a Wednesday evening. Each cub scout family would be asked to donate 2 large loaves of bread, approximately 3 pounds of sandwich meat/cheese, and an hour or so of time just once every 8-9 weeks. If purchased on sale, the fixin's should cost no more than $12 to $15 per family*. Susan will deliver the sandwiches to Elizabeth the day after they are made. Participation in the program is strictly voluntary. As part of the Cub Scout promise stated above, our Cubs declare their willingness to help other people. Let us support our boys in keeping their promise. Let's show them that helping other people is a real, hands-on endeavor. We will be introducing the program at Friday's pack meeting. Your den leaders will be contacting you with detailed instructions and the date of your den's first turn. As always, feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns you might have. Yours in Scouting, *We understand that this may be a financial difficulty for some of our families. Pack funds will be made available to those families who wish to participate but need financial assistance to do so. Please contact me privately to make those arrangements.
